My name is Jessica Heckathorn. I was born and raised in Kansas City, MO. I left right after high school to follow my older sister to Colorado Springs. I spent a few years there before bouncing around a little between Kansas City and the suburbs of Detroit, then I started at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. I earned a BA in English, concentration Creative Writing. After graduation I went to work for SQL Server Magazine in Loveland, CO. After a few years there, my wanderlust kicked in again and I moved to New York City, where I am today.
When I was younger I dreamed of chasing wolves through the woods for a living. When I entered Colorado State I was a Wildlife Biology major with a Zoology minor. I switched to English after my first year when I was facing a semester of Organic Chemistry. I remain concerned about the environment and our natural resources. Before I started at CSU, I spent two semesters at community college in Kansas City as a music major. I’ve been playing the piano since I was seven-years-old. Music plays a large role in my life and influences my work continuously. I recently began teaching myself how to play the violin. Joseph Campbell’s work on the heroic journey is another major influence on my work; I have spent a lot of time studying his work and general mythol0gy. Other interests include: Frank Lloyd Wright, Beethoven, Ayn Rand, Van Gogh, Monet, New York, eastern and western philosophy, art, film, literature, television, and much, much more. But I’ll try to keep my tangents here to a minimum.
